Strawberries ….. the delightful fruit. Strawberries are a very delightful fruit. They are used to make pies, mix in drinks, cook with, in salads, and ever popular in ice creams. The possibilities with strawberries are fairly endless. The smell of a strawberry is even extracted or created for perfumes and cosmetics. I would heartily agree that the aroma of the strawberry is like no other. In my experience, strawberries are hard to grow on your own. Some have accomplished, it but I have never been able to do so. However, for those who do… they are greatly rewarded with big, juicy red strawberries. Some strawberries grow in the wild, it has been documented that wild strawberries grew in Italy as far back as 234 B.C. There are many theories as to how the strawberry was named. Some believe they got their name from the act of putting straw around the plant for protection and others believe it was named for the stem they produce. The name may have been derived from the Anglo-Saxon verb to strew (spread) and the fruit came to be known as streabergen, straberry, streberie, straibery, straubery, and finally, "STRAWBERRY” to the English. The garden strawberry was first bred in Brittany, France, in the 1750s. All I know is that to me, strawberries are truly delightful and delicious.
